How this is calculated
The calculator enumerates every civil date in the selected Gregorian year, counts dates from Monday through Friday, and then deducts each unique observed federal holiday date when holiday exclusion is on.
- Count every Monday–Friday weekday in the selected year.
- Find federal holiday closures by their observed dates.
- Deduct each unique observed closure once and total the same dates by month.
What is included
The default result uses a standard Monday–Friday workweek and the eleven recurring U.S. federal holidays named in 5 U.S.C. § 6103. Saturday holidays move to Friday and Sunday holidays move to Monday for this calculation.
What is not included
State, local, school, market, company, and organization-specific holidays are excluded. The tool also excludes Inauguration Day, one-time executive closures, custom holidays, shift patterns, compressed workweeks, and alternative work schedules.
The result is informational. Check the applicable official calendar and your organization’s policy for payroll, legal, contractual, or compliance decisions.
Unverified years are projections
Stored OPM fixtures verify 2021, 2022, 2026, and 2027. Every other supported year is projected using current U.S. federal holiday and observation rules. Laws or one-time closures may change a projected result, so compare it with the applicable OPM calendar.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn’t a year always exactly 260 work days?
The weekday total changes with the year’s length and where January 1 falls. Deducting observed federal holidays changes the final total again.
Are federal holidays included?
Observed U.S. federal holidays are deducted by default. Turn off the displayed setting to keep every Monday–Friday weekday in the result.
What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For this standard Monday–Friday calculation, a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday and a Sunday holiday is observed on Monday.
Are state, local, and company holidays included?
No. The calculator does not include state, local, school, market, company, or organization-specific closures.
Why can next year’s New Year’s Day affect this year’s result?
When January 1 falls on a Saturday, its observed Friday is December 31 of the preceding year. Results assign the closure to that observed date.
Is this result suitable for payroll or legal compliance?
No. Use the applicable law, official calendar, and your organization’s policy for payroll, legal, contractual, or compliance decisions.
