How business days are counted

The calculator first determines which calendar dates participate, then classifies each date under the selected weekend, observed federal holiday, and shutdown rules. Dates matching more than one exclusion are deducted once.

  1. Apply the start and end inclusion choices.
  2. Mark configured weekend weekdays.
  3. Mark observed U.S. federal holidays and custom shutdowns.
  4. Count every remaining date as one business day.

Adding and subtracting business days

The starting date is never day 1. The calculator moves one calendar date at a time and advances the requested count only when the date is a business day. A request for zero returns the starting date.

Coverage and limitations

The built-in calendar covers observed U.S. federal holidays only. It excludes state, local, school, market, company, industry, and other-country holidays. Custom shutdown dates are your rules, not official holidays.

The supported range is 2021 through 2036. Results touching unverified holiday years are marked as projections under current recurring rules.

Federal holiday rules were last reviewed on 2026-08-11. They are bundled with the site; the calculator makes no live request to OPM.

Frequently asked questions

Are the start and end dates included?

Both are included by default. You can exclude either endpoint before counting.

Is the starting date counted when adding business days?

No. Counting starts on the next or previous calendar date; zero business days returns the starting date.

Which holidays are included?

Only observed United States federal holidays are built in. State, local, company, market, and other-country holidays are not included.

What happens when exclusions overlap?

A date excluded by a weekend, federal holiday, and shutdown rule is deducted only once, while every reason remains visible.

Can I use a custom weekend?

Yes. Choose one to six non-working weekdays, leaving at least one working day each week.

Is this suitable for payroll or legal compliance?

No. Verify applicable law, contracts, and your organization’s calendar before making payroll or compliance decisions.
